Abstract

1438490 Linkwork CARDING SPECIALISTS (CANADA) Ltd 5 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 46713/75 Heading F2K [Also in Division F1] A compressor piston 9, Fig. 1, is reciprocated and rotated by rotating a shaft 16 carrying the piston, the rotation of the shaft causing double-lobed cams 19, 20 fixed thereto to co-operate with rollers 24, 28, 29, 30 rotatably mounted on the cylinder 2, thereby to cause reciprocation of the piston. The shaft 16 is driven by a belt driven axially fixed shaft 168 through a coupling mechanism 167 which allows reciprocation of the shaft 16. Mechanism 167 comprises a belt crank lever 175, Figs. 4 and 9, secured to the shaft 168, the ends 180, 182 thereof pivotably supporting levers 179, 182, respectively. The radially outer ends of the levers 179, 182 carry rollers 187, 188 each engaging a side of a respective axial projection 173, 174 on one of the cams 19, 20 (shown as 166, 164 in Fig. 4). Opposite ends of the levers 179, 182 engage one another through their respective hardened pad 186 and tip 185. A second bell crank lever 189 journalled on the shaft 168 has similarly mounted levers 192, 195 with rollers 200, 201 engaging the other sides of the projections. A tension spring 202 is connected between extensions on the bell crank levers 175, 189. Because the moment arms A are equal and the moment arms B are also equal, the coupling mechanism prevents backlash and side thrust.
