Abstract
1438421 Removal of bromohydrocarbons from chlorohydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Jan 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 05831/74 Heading C2C Chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated with one or more bromohydrocarbons optionally also chloro-substituted is purified by contacting in the vapour phase with a metal chloride such as the chloride of an alkali metal, alkaline earth, rare earth, transistion or Group Ib or IIb metal, and subsequently separating from the chlorinated hydrocarbon, at least in part, the newlyformed product of contact. The contaminated chlorohydrocarbon may have 1-6 C atoms, especially 1-2 C atoms together with 0À1-20 parts by weight of bromohydrocarbon per 100 parts by weight. Nickel chloride is a useful chloride in the process and it may be used on a support, e.g. of active carbon. In the examples chloroform contaminated with CH 2 ClBr; CCl 4 contaminated with CHCl 2 Br; CCl 4 containing CHCl 3 and CHCl 2 Br; and 1,2,2-trichloroethane contaminated with 1-chloro-2-bromoethane are purified through a bed of active carbon impregnated with 10% by weight of nickel chloride.
