Abstract

1438291 Wrapping machines A CAMPTON & SONS CO Ltd 12 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 42455/72 Heading B8C A machine for wrapping articles in stretchable film material comprises a chain conveyer (11), Fig. 1 (not shown), for feeding articles into a lifting platform, Fig. 12 (not shown), on which the article is raised into a length of stretchable film which has been fed to a position above the lifting platform and clamped in this position by edge clamping bars 194-197, two pairs of reoiprocable wrapping blades 172-175 for folding the film under the article and which, as a result of the resistance produced by the clamping bars 194-197, simultaneously stretch the film about the article, and a discharge conveyer on to which the wrapped article is pushed by a reciprocable pusher 176 and where a heating element fuses the overlapping portions of the film to one another under the article. The wrapping blades of each pair are movable in opposite directions to one another, and transversely to the blades of the other pair. One pair of blades is located above the other pair of blades. A roller 169 is provided on the leading edge of each wrapping blade. The lifting platform includes a plate (99) Fig. 12 (not shown), on and against which upwardly extending cylindrical support members (100) are resiliently held by springs (103). The wrapping blades displace the support members (100) from vertical positions during the folding operation and support the article; allowing the supporting platform to be lowered. The film is supplied from a roll, transversely perforated at predetermined intervals by a pivoted and vertically movable plate and fed above the lifting platform between pairs of upper and lower endless belts 46, 47. The belts pass around driven rollers 49, 52, and idler rollers 48, 50 mounted on a frame which is reciprocable by means of a crank drive 20. The drive rollers 49, 52 are driven by gears rotated by a fixed rack 60 upon reciprocation of the frame. The length of the film drawn from the roll is variable by adjusting the throw of the crank drive 20. The clamping bars 194, 195 are spring-urged against the undersides of the lower conveyer belts 47. A pivotally mounted stop plate 193 constrains the article in the wrapping position from moving towards the discharge conveyer during the wrapping operation. The various components associated with the article feed, the wrapping operation and the discharge of the wrapped article are driven by a common motor through systems of gears, cams and levers. The crank drive 20 for the film feed is driven by a further motor.
