1437739 Vehicle bumpers SHERMAN UNIVERSAL CORP 27 Feb 1974 8991/74 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A telescopic shock absorber mounting a vehicle bumper 22<SP>1</SP> comprises a cylinder 10<SP>1</SP>, a piston 21<SP>1</SP> slidable in the cylinder and connected to a piston-rod 18<SP>1</SP>, an elastomeric member, e.g. a sleeve 52<SP>1</SP> slidable in the cylinder with one end engaging the piston, a slide 32<SP>1</SP> slidable in the cylinder and interposed between an in-. flatable bag 24<SP>1</SP> and the outer end of the sleeve, and means 35<SP>1</SP> on the slide engageable with the sleeve to force it against the cylinder and provide a frictional resistance to movement of the piston into the cylinder. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the conical section 35<SP>1</SP> of the slide is connected to a shaft (36) which extends through the bore 53<SP>1</SP> in the sleeve 52<SP>1</SP> and into the hollow pistonrod 18<SP>1</SP>, and a spring (46) inside the piston-rod acts between the piston and a plate (48) on the shaft to urge the conical section 35<SP>1</SP> into engagement with the sleeve 52<SP>1</SP>.
