Abstract
1437560 Accumulators for ropes and the like S H HUNKE 2 Dec 1974 [14 Dec 1973] 52099/74 Headings D1D and D1T In the rotary accumulator shown in Fig. 2 the rotor 12 carries spindles 3 that are offset from but parallel to the axle 14 of the rotor 12, there being a plurality of reels 4 on each spindle 3. A rope 1 passes from an entry guide wheel 5 over a first reel 4 of one stack, under a first reel 4 of the other stack and then away via an exit guide wheel 6. By rotating the rotor 12 and moving it axially so that it approaches the guide wheels 5, 6 the travelling rope 1 may be wound up on the stacks of reels 4. Subsequently, by reversing the rotation and traverse of the rotor 12 the stored quantity may be unwound. The invention is applicable to lines used in the processing of cable, wire, rope, string, tape or strip. When the tension in the line of material diminishes, the torque exerted by a drive motor 9 exceeds the resisting torque imposed by the line tension and the accumulator 10 is then rotated by the motor 9 in a direction winding up the slack in the material. The accumulated material is discharged when the torque developed by the line tension exceeds the torque of the motor 9.
