Abstract
1437548 Alumina; sodium aluminate VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM-WERKE AG 15 Feb 1974 [17 Feb 1973] 7086/74 Heading C1A Process for the continuous digestion of bauxite with sodium hydroxide in which a suspension of bauxite in sodium hydroxide solution flows through a tube or nest of tubes at a velocity of 0À5-7 metres per second, under a pressure of 10-200 atmospheres and at a temperature of 200-300 C. and is heated by a fluid heat carrier flowing counter-current in a concentric outer tube where the flow of the suspension is turbulent and at a Reynolds number # 10<SP>5</SP> and the suspension to be digested has a solids concentration of from 1-6% by volume, the solids having a grain diameter of 10-150 Ám. The heat carrier may be hot digested suspension or steam. Some of the red mud obtained during the digestion of the bauxite may be recycled into the digestion tube.
