Abstract

1437438 Stuffing boxes; valves POLYSAR Ltd 30 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 36064/73 Headings F2B and F2V A stuffing box for a sliding wedge, screw operated gate valve is sealed by introducing a liquid, curable, elastomeric composition to essentially fill the stuffing box cavity 24, and curing the composition in situ to produce a resilient seal 29. The stuffing box may enclose solid packing material compressed by a gland 25 around the valve stem 21, leakage being halted by injection of the curable liquid when the gland 25 can no longer be tightened by nuts (32), Fig. 1 (not shown), on bolts 31 pivoted to a casing 15. In high pressure applications, the composition may be introduced in service by screwing a tube 34 with a cock 36 into a blind bore in the casing 15, drilling through the casing 15 into the packing material, with the cock 36 open, withdrawing the drill through a rotary seal (not shown) outside the cock 36 and closing the cock 36, attaching a one-way flow fitting 37 and opening the cock 36, and then forcing the composition through the fitting 37 by means of a grease gun. For low pressure applications, the composition may be injected directly from a grease gun pressed into a countersunk bore in the casing 15, whereupon the composition is left to cure. The composition preferably comprises a mixture of a polymer of conjugated diolefin containing polymeric molecules with more than one allylic halide group, and a polyfunctional amine curative.
