Abstract
1437180 Measuring volumes GRUNDY (TEDDINGTON) Ltd 28 Aug 1973 40053/72 Heading B8T [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the volume of a container such as a beer barrel comprises a reservoir 14 (Fig. 2) for feeding liquid to top up the container, after a known volume of liquid has already been inserted and a device for indicating the number of incremental topping up doses fed from the reservoir 14. As shown, a drum or disc 11 having equally spaced circumferential holes 12 therein is caused to rotate by the descent of a float 15 in the reservoir 14 as the liquid is fed through an outlet 20 to the container under test. The rotation of the disc or drum causes photo-electric devices (13a), Fig. 3 (not shown), 13b to be actuated intermittently thereby to indicate the amount of liquid supplied through the outlet 20. The float 15 may be connected to a damper 18 in a liquid filled tube 17 by way of a cord 16 trained around the disc or drum 11. Second photoelectric means 13c may give warning of excessive capacity of the container. Means for supplying the initial known volume of liquid to the container, may comprise a vessel 5 (Fig. 1) having a valve controlled outlet 6, valve controlled inlets 1, 2, a plunger 4 for adjusting the internal volume of the vessel 5, and sensors A and B for controlling the valves of inlets 2 and 1 respectively. In use and with the valve 7 of the outlet 6 closed, the vessel 5 is supplied with liquid through the inlet 2 until such liquid reaches the sensor A. The valve of inlet 2 then closes and the valve of inlet 1 opens to allow a topping up liquid feed to be supplied to the vessel 5 through inlet 1 until the sensor B is actuated. The liquid in the vessel 5 is then of a predetermined volume and can be discharged through outlet 6 to the container under test.
