Abstract
1437048 Sucrose derivatives TATE & LYLE Ltd 24 Feb 1975 [4 March 1974] 9676/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises 4,6-o-isopropylidenesucrose (Formula I, R = H) its hexa-acetate (R = acetyl) its hexabenzoate (R = benzoyl) and 1<SP>1</SP>2,3,3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>,6<SP>1</SP> - hexa - o - benzoylsucrose (Formula II, R=benzoyl) 4,6 - o - isopropylidenesucrose is prepared by treating sucrose with 2,2-dimethoxypropane in N,N-dimethylformamide in the presence of p-toluenesulphonic acid; it may be isolated from the reaction mixture by chromatography on silica gel, or it may after neutralising the mixture, for example with an anion-exchange resin, be converted to the hexaacetate or hexabenzoate (I, R=acetyl or benzoyl) using for example acetic anhydride or benzoyl chloride in pyridine, and recovered in that form. The hexa-acetate or hexabenzoate may be catalytically de-esterified using sodium methoxide to recover 4,6-oisopropylidenesucrose, or hydrolysed to give the corresponding hexaacetyl or hexabenzoyl compound of Formula II
