Abstract

1437045 Polyester films MITSUBISHI PLASTICS INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Jan 1974 [18 Jan 1973 26 Sept 1973] 02116/74 Heading B5B A polyester film is obtained by coating a melt of the polymer on to a moving cooling surface, such as roll 3, to which a layer 5 of a liquid is applied by means such as a coater 4. The liquid must have a boiling point of 150-220‹ C. and a surface tension of less than 50 dyne/cm. at room temperature. The layer must be uniform and thin. The film is removed from the roll and biaxially stretched and heat-set. The longitudinal stretching is performed at a stretch ratio of 2À5 to 4À5 times and a temperature of 80 to 100‹ C., the lateral stretching at 3 to 4À5 times and 90‹ to 140‹ C. The heat-setting temperature is sufficient to remove the organic liquid from the film. The preferred polymer is polyethylene terephthalate.
