Abstract

1436919 Electron beam apparatus PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 22422/74 Heading H1D An electric discharge tube (Figs. 1, 2) comprises a vacuum-tight envelope 1 with apertures 8, 12 which are sealed by means of indium or indium-containing material which also provides an electrical lead-through, the envelope containing an electrode which is not a wall electrode; i.e. is not formed by a conductive layer on the wall, and is "thermally bonded" directly or via an electric conductor to the indium or indium-containing material of the lead-through. The "thermal bonding" process involves the presence of inium or indium-containing material in its liquid phase. Envelope 1 consists of a tube 1 closed by a cap Z and a window 3, all of glass, which carries a photosensitive layer 17 and is fixed to tube 1 by a ring 16 of indium. A copper gauze electrode 4 spaced from and parallel to window 3 is fixed between chromium-nickel steel rings 5, 6. Resilient lugs 7 cut out of ring 5 have projections 18 fixed to material filling apertures 8 in tube 1. The material may be indium, which may be alloyed with Pt, Au, Ag, Cu, Sn, Pb, Ga or Ni. The aperture may be metal-lined. The indium plug may be covered by a metal plate 9. An electrode 10, forming together with a wall electrode 13 part of an electron lens, is mounted in tube 1 similarly to electrode 4, and is connected to indium or indium-containing plugs in aperture 12. The apertures 8, 12 may be formed by sandblasting, and their walls covered by a thin layer of metal, preferably nickel. The electrodes are held in position with lugs thereon in contact with indium-containing material in the apertures. The tube is de-gassed at high temperature which melts the material which forms a seal when cooled. The tube may be formed with a shoulder to locate an electrode.
