Abstract
1436518 Variable microwave attenuators VARIAN ASSOCIATES 18 Sept 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 40693/74 Heading H1W A portion of the output energy of a microwave source is variably directed into an absorptive load and the rest into a useful (active) load. As shown, the source 10 and active load 34 are coupled to the arms 12, 32 of a waveguide fourport circulator 14 whilst the absorptive load 22 is coupled to an intermediate port 18 through an adjustable reactance in the form of a stub 28 and piston 30. The value of this reactance determines the ratio of energy distribution between the loads 22 and 34. A further absorptive load may be coupled to port 36 for interception of energy reflected from the active load 34. Both the absorptive loads may be water loads. The piston 30 may be automatically actuated by known means 42, 42 governed by command signals from an external source or from a power sensor in waveguide 32. The waveguides may be filled with sulphur hexafluoride.
