Abstract

143,642. Terrell, T. Feb. 28, 1919. Circular looms; shuttleless l o o m s ; fashioned fabrics, looms specially designed for.- In manufacturing shaped tubular fabrics, such as incandescent gas mantles, a fabric is woven tubular to the shape required, preferably in the form of a continuous length of fabric, which is cut at the parts E, H, Fig. 10, to form the mantles &c. Two or more wefts d, d', Fig. 9, may be employed. The mantles may also be produced from a fabric having a series of bag-like portions all arranged the same way. The fabric is formed on a shaped mandrel 60, Figs. 1 and 2, around which the wefts are tightly drawn at the point where they are interlaced with the warps, the mandrel being moved slowly up and down to vary the width of the tubular fabric being produced. The mandrel comprises a cylindrical part, a peg 71, and a hemispherical portion 70, in which a spiral shoulder may be cut, the direction and the angle of the spiral corresponding to the spiral on which the threads are laid; or the portion 70 may be roughened. The warp bobbins 32 are carried on bobbin-holders 29, Fig. 5, provided with thread-guides 33, these holders being guided upon pins 28 arranged in a circle on an inner stationary cylinder 27. To form a shed, certain of the holders are moved on to coaxial upper pins 28 on a stationary plate 24 by jacks 46 provided with flanges 48 and reciprocated vertically in grooves in the stationary cylinder 27 by means of cam-surfaces on the inner face of a cylinder 40, which is rotated by spur gearing 43, 44, these cam-surfaces engaging tongues 47 on the jacks. The cam-surfaces may be formed by adjustable plates secured to the interior wall of the cylinder 40, and may, at some parts, actuate the jacks positively in both directions. The jacks may be in two series, actuated respectively by an upper and a lower cam, so formed as to lift and lower the bobbin-holders once for each revolution of the cylinder 40. A cam may be fixed to the upper part of the cylinder 40 to engage the raised bobbincarriers and force them down in case they stick in their raised positions. The weft cops 55 are carried by vertical pins 54 on brackets 53 on the rotating cylinder 40, and the wefts therefrom pass through thread-guides comprising longitudinal holes 58, Fig. 4, in tapered knives 57 on arms 56 on the cylinder 40, the knives entering between the rounded lower edges of the raised bobbincarriers and their jacks, which may be similarly curved, thereby raising the bobbincarriers from their jacks, whilst the weft threads are being introduced. The mandrel 60 is carried by a rod 61 passing through bearings 62, and is reciprocated vertically by means of an eccentrically-mounted roller 64 on a shaft driven by worm gearing etc.; or the mandrel may be moved uniformly by means of rack gearing, and it may be flexible. The fabric may be woven to the shape of the mandrel, and the mandrel be then withdrawn rapidly so as to start weaving on the peg again. Take-up motions. - The fabric is withdrawn from the mandrel, preferably at a speed equal to the speed of reciprocation thereof, by means of a roller 75, which is driven by worm gearing &c. and coacts with a spring- controlled roller 76.
