Abstract
1436245 Carbon fibres KANEBO Ltd 4 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972 15 Nov 1972 (3)] 41563/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Activated carbon fibres able to catalyse the oxidation of carbon monoxide have a surface area of 800 to 3000 m<SP>2</SP>/g. and carry at least 0À05% by weight, preferably 0À05 to 30%, calculated as the metal and based on the weight of the fibres excluding the active catalyst ingredient, of one or more of palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and platinum, as the free metal or as a compound thereof, as an active catalyst ingredient. The carbon fibres may be derived from phenol resins, polyacrylonitrile, cellulosic, and pitch fibres, especially a novolac resin or a mixture of a novolac resin and a pitch, the novolac content being at least 30% by weight. In a preferred method a melt-spinnable carbonizable resin is mixed with elemental Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru or a compound thereof, the mixture meltspun to form fibres which are cured to make them infusible, carbonized, and the carbon fibres activated. Activation is effected using a mixture of steam and nitrogen, and carbonization at 900 C. in a nitrogen atmosphere. In another method a carbonizable infusible polymer, suitably polyacrylonitrile, cellulose or a resol, is dissolved to form a spinning dope, the catalyst incorporated therein and the dope spun into fibres which are carbonized and activated. Alternatively the catalyst may be applied to carbonizable and infusible fibres suitably phenol resin fibres, polyacrylonitrile fibres or cellulosic fibres which are then carbonized and activated. In a further method carbonizable and infusible fibres are carbonized and activated, at least one compound of Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru incorporated in the activated carbon fibres, and the fibres subjected to a reducing treatment, e.g. with hydrogen at 100 to 500 C., or to heat-treatment at not less than 500 C. in an inert gas or in air, or to treatment With formaldehyde or hydrazine to convert at least part of the metal compound to a metal element. In gas absorption tests, a gaseous mixture consisting of 400 p.p.m. carbon monoxide, 40 p.p.m. carbon dioxide, 20% oxygen and the remainder nitrogen is passed through a column of the fibres, and all the carbon monoxide is oxidized.
