Abstract

1436227 Road vehicle signalling E A BRYANT 18 June 1973 28851/73 Heading G4Q [Also in Division H1] In a motor vehicle system affording a warning light when a throttle switch or a brake switch are actuated and wherein the throttle switch is an inertia switch actuated briefly on sudden throttle release, electrical time delay means sustains the light initiated by the actuation of the inertia switch. General circuit arrangement, Fig. 11.-Stop lamps 123 are energized via brake switch 122 and a circuit bridging the latter; such circuit includes a microswitch 26, inertia switch 12, relays 57, 59 and associated contacts, and a thermal switch 99 incorporating an extensible wire 111. When switch 12 closes a temporary earth is connected to the relay coils and closure of contacts 69 causes the stop lamps to shine and to continue to do so when switch 12 breaks; also contacts 71 close to energize wire 111 and, after a delay, closure of contacts 103, 104 thereby breaking contacts 69, 71. If, as usual, brake switch 122 closes before contacts 103, 104 close, device 50 is de-energized. Switch 26 only opens when the throttle approaches full opening and then renders inertia switch operation ineffective; thus spurious operation by actuation of the inertia switch when a throttle opening is stopped suddenly at the fully open position is prevented. Switch 26 may, however, be omitted. A dash-board lamp 127 glows when current flows through wire 111. SWITCH DETAILS Inertia switch. Fig. 3.-The switch is clamped by collets to throttle linkage rod 23 and the inertia switch swings bodily about the rod's axis and the rod rotates, Figs. 1, 2 (neither shown). An adjustable striker (27) (Fig. 2) clamped to casing 13 actuates switch 26 when the throttle is fully open. An insulating plate 31 carries an outer connector leaf 32 connected to a contact arm 33 by a rivet 34. Head 36 is adjustable by screw 37 and when the throttle suddenly closes a weighted resilient leaf 41 moves to cause a contact 42 to close on fixed contact 36, Fig. 5 (not shown). Time delay means, Figs. 6 and 11, incorporates coils 53, 54 and an expansion wire III (see also Fig. 7, not shown). Once the inertia switch closes the circuit is held and after a time interval determined by wire 111 and a coil 114, contact 104 engages contact 103 thereby causing sets of contacts 69, 71 to open and the circuit reverts to its original condition.
