Abstract

1436149 Ultrasonic testing apparatus; ultrasonic probes THYSSEN NEIDERRHEIN AG HUTTEN-UND WALZWERKE 10 Sept 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 42417/73 Headings H4D and H4J A device for the continuous ultrasonic testing of rolled strip comprises a movable carriage (6) (Fig. 1, not shown) carrying ultrasonic transmitter 15 and receiver 16 mounted in chambers 14 each defined by two parallel plates 17 joined by a square U-shaped housing portion 19, the base of the housing portion 19 covering the open bottoms of both chambers and the limbs of the housing portion 19 covering the open sides of both chambers such that there is an air gap 20 between the two adjacent plates 17 which are also joined at their top edges by a rib 21 (see also, Fig. 3, not shown) the housing portion and rib being thinner than plates 17. In the embodiment, the carriage moves at right angles to the strip motion and the ultrasonic transducers are coupled to the strip by fluid supplied via pipe 23. The inner surfaces of the housing portion 19 and rib 21 are provided with a layer of foam so that the rib and housing portion do not directly contact the plates 17. Openings 27 are provided to allow drainage of any coupling fluid in air gap 20.
