Abstract

1436063 Dehalogenating metal oxide compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 3 May 1974 [23 July 1973] 19456/74 Addition to 1337089 Heading C1A The process condition of the parent Specification, i.e. heating at 600-1600‹ F. in a dehalogenating atmosphere comprising a vaporized alcohol, are applied to the removal of halide ions from solid metal oxide compositions. The compositions may contain ceramics, including uranium dioxide, plutonium oxide, gadolinium oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and mixtures thereof. The dehalogenating atmosphere may contain dry or wet H 2 , or " dissociated NH 3 " (a mixture of H 2 , N 2 and NH 3 ), or an inert carrier, e.g. rare gases. The alcohol may be a C 1-10 alkanol. Dehalogenation may be preceded by dehydration at 200-750‹ F. and followed by de-alcoholation by heating at 1250-1650‹ F. in H 2 or dissociated NH 3 . The products have increased surface area.
