Abstract
1435848 Recovery of ethylene oxide; ethylene glycol NIPPON SHOKUBAI KAGAKU KOGYO CO Ltd 8 April 1974 15543/74 Heading C2C Ethylene oxide is recovered from a gaseous reaction product obtained by oxidizing ethylene in the vapour phase with molecular O 2 in the presence of a silver-containing catalyst by a method which comprises: (a) passing the gaseous reaction product to an absorption column maintained at a pressure of 2 to 40 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>; (b) counter-currently contacting the gaseous reaction product in the absorption column with an aqueous aborbent having a pH of 3 to 12 and containing 0À1 to 40% by wt. of and 0À5 to 1000 p.p.m. of a defoaming agent, to form an aqueous ethylene oxide solution; (c) passing the aqueous ethylene oxide solution formed in step (b) to a stripping column; (d) stripping and recovering ethylene oxide from the aqueous ethylene oxide solution; and (e) recycling at least part of the stripped aqueous solution remaining after step (d) to the absorption column. Ethylene glycol may be recovered by removing part of the stripped aqueous solution remaining after step (d) and recovering it therefrom. Specified defoaming agents are organopolysiloxanes and polyalkylene glycols of greater hydrophobicity than ethylene glycol. The pH of aqueous absorbent may be maintained above 3 by the addition of an aqueous solution of KOH, NaOH or Na 2 CO 2 to the recycled stripped aqueous solution. An apparatus is described for carrying out the process.
