Abstract
1435635 Oxycarbonylation ROHM GmbH 8 May 1974 [12 May 1973] 20344/74 Addition to 1419577 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Ethylene or propylene are reacted under substantially anhydrous conditions with oxygen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) at least one solvent soluble compound of silicon, phosphorus, gallium or germanium; and at least one compound of palladium or element of Groups IVB, VB, VIB or VIIB of Periodic Table; or a complex of such compounds. (B) at least one solvent, soluble compound of aluminium or alkaline earth metal and at least one solvent soluble compound of iron or copper; or a complex derived therefrom or (C) at least one solvent-soluble compound of silicon, phosphorus, gallium or germanium and at least one solvent soluble compound of iron or copper; or a complex derived therefrom. The catalyst system A may include additionally at least one compound of aluminium or alkaline earth metal; system B a compound of palladium or element of Group IVB, VB, VIB or VIIB; and system C a compound of aluminium or alkaline earth metal and/or a compound of palladium or Group IVB, VB, VIB or VIIB element. The Periodic Group elements are Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn and Tc and the alkaline earth metals are Be, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba. Particularly active catalysts contain a cyanide and/or halide ion which may be present as ligands. α-#-Unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared with in the case of ethylene, #- acetoxypropionic acid or propylene, crotonic acid. Examples describe the preparation from propylene of a mixture of 1,2-propanediol diacetate, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, and #-acetoxy-n-butyric acid.
