Abstract
1435623 Loud-speakers J G DAHLQUIST 12 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 52435/73 Headings H4J and H4X In a multiple permanent magnet transducer assembly the bais unit is mounted in its own enclosure and one or more h.f. transducers are mounted in an acoustically transparent compartment outside the bais enclosure by means presenting minimal frontal area and allowing almost all of the transducer to be surrounded by free space. This arrangement prevents the formation of secondary sound sources at discontinuities, particularly the edges, of baffles carrying h.f. transducers which would otherwise produce time delay and intermodulation distortion. The h.f. units are staggered, Fig. 3, according to response time, the fastest being rearmost, so that sounds from each unit reach the on-axis listener at the same instant. The distances may be determined empircally using a square wave source covering frequencies of two adjacent units and determining by microphone and oscilloscope when the reproduced square wave has the best shape. The rear face of the compartment may be acoustically semitransparent to reduce rearward radiation. In a modification (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) a single support for all h.f. units is stepped to the appropriate dimensions.
