Abstract

1435093 Motor vehicle safety devices SURREY STEEL COMPONENTS Ltd 4 May 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5378/72 Heading B7H A vehicle having a seat belt includes a set of switches which are arranged to be automatically actuated in a certain sequence when a person enters the vehicle and fastens the belt, operation of the vehicle being prevented until the switches have been actuated in that sequence. Two sets of electric switches A, B associated with the driver's and the front seat passenger's seat belt respectively are connected to a control circuit 10 which is also connected to the ignition circuit 12 of the vehicle, an alarm buzzer 12 and a bonnet switch 11. Switch 14 is actuated when a predetermined length of belt is drawn off the reel of the driver's belt and switch 15 is actuated when the belt is fastened, so that the ignition system 12 is only energized by the circuit 10 if a sufficient length of belt to go around the driver is drawn off before the belt is fastened. Switch 16 is a weight detector or proximity switch which is actuated only if a passenger sits in the passenger seat so that switches 17, 18 which are actuated in similar manner to the switches 14, 15 but by the passenger's belt are operative only if the passenger's seat is occupied. Once the vehicle is in motion the ignition circuit is not disabled if any of the switches is de-actuated but the alarm buzzer 12 and/or a warning light is energized. The bonnet switch 11 overrides the sets of switches A, B when the bonnet is open so that the engine can be run with the vehicle unoccupied for maintainance or testing purposes. There may be a switch actuated by the closing of one or more doors of the vehicle, and mechanical switches or hydraulic switches connected to the braking system of the vehicle may be used instead of electric switches.
