Abstract
1434794 Electro-acoustic devices WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 24 April 1973 [4 May 1972] 19386/73 Heading H3U [Also in Division G1] A transmission system for acoustic energy comprises two electro-acoustic transducers connected by a flexible waveguide comprising inorganic fibres bonded together, the fibres constituting at least 40% by volume of the waveguide. The waveguide may be in the form of a single rod, 22, Fig. 2, or a plurality of rods (122, Figs. 3, 4, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the waveguide 22 is secured at each end to a transducer head part 28. Each transducer 16 also comprises a tail part 33 and two annular piezo-ceramic wafers 19, 19A which are polarized longitudinally of the transducer and are held against the head 28 by a nut 36 and a Belleville washer 38 on a through bolt 30. The end surfaces 24, 26 of both wafers are silvered and connected to terminals 12, 14, 14A so that when an A.C. potential is applied thereto, longitudinal waves are fed to the waveguide. In the embodiment of Figs. 6, 7 the transducer comprises wafers 119, 119A which each comprise four circumferentially-spaced parts 119B-119E which are coated with silver 120 on their facing walls. The transducer also comprises an annular section 135 to which are cemented the ends of annular spools 137A, 137B, of e.g. P.T.F.E., whose other ends are cemented to the head part 128A and tail part 113A respectively. Circumferentially adjacent wafer parts are longitudinally polarized in opposite directions so that when an A.C. potential is applied via conductors 122, 124 rotational vibrations are delivered to the waveguide 122A. A third embodiment (Figs. 9-11, not shown) comprises one or more wafers having two diametrically opposite parts (119G-119H) with their end surfaces silvered; this arrangement imparts, a rocking, vibratory motion to the waveguide (122B). The device may be used to provide power to a transmitter which emits a signal 8 indicating the current characteristics of a high voltage line (Fig. 1, not shown).
