Abstract

1434600 Boring and turning polygonal shapes H E WHEELER 14 Sept 1973 43342/73 Headings B3T and B3C A boring or turning tool 1 for machining polygonal surfaces when mounted on a lathe turret 2, comprises a cylindrical housing 6 adapted to be driven at 7, Figs. 1, 2, 4, by a lathe chuck 38, Fig. 7, a cutter bar 9 supported in the housing, a polygonal-shaped cam 16 rotatably mounted in the housing and having a continuous groove 15, one face of which is employed when boring, and the other face when turning, a cam follower 17 having a pin 14 which is seated in groove 15, and an adjustable cam follower 22, having an adjustable pin 21 which is seated in an elongated slot 23 formed in a transverse slide 20. When cam 16 is rotated, slide 20, along with cutter bar 9, is reciprocated to thus cut a polygonal shape on the workpiece. Cam follower 22 is adjustable so as to vary the size of the surface to be produced, by a coarseadjustment means 51, and a micrometer adjustment means 54, Fig. 7. Driver means 7 may be replaced by a shock absorbing driver (64), (65), Fig. 12 (not shown), or means 7 may co-operate with a drive member (68) Fig. 13 (not shown), bolted to the nose of the lathe spindle. In a modification, a dog-type drive unit (70) Fig. 15 (not shown) is used.
