Abstract

1433726 Electrostatographic toners; derivatives of polyvinyl alcohols KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 18 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 11874/74 Headings C3P C3B and C3R [Also in Division G2] An electrostatographic toner comprises a colourant and at least one resin having structural units of the general formula wherein R 1 is H, alkyl, or substituted alkyl, R 2 is alkylene, substituted alkylene, arylene or substituted arylene, and X is (where R 3 and R 4 are H, aryl or substituted aryl), halogen, -OH, -COOH, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, -NO 2 or -CN. The polymers are usually obtained by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with an aldehyde or ketone. Formulae are given, in which polyvinyl alcohol has been reacted with dimethylamino acetaldehyde, pdimethylamino benzaldehyde, 3-methyl-4-dimethylamino benzaldehyde, 5 - dimethylaminonaphthaldehyde, p - chlorobenzaldehyde, p - nitrobenzaldehyde, p - cyanobenzaldehyde, p - hydroxybenzaldehyde, p - carboxybenzaldehyde and p-methoxycarbonylbenzaldehyde The use of the first, second, and sixth to eighth of these reactants is exemplified. The prepared resins are then mixed with one or more colourants (carbon or dyes) and optionally another polymer (styrene polymers such as styrene/ butyl methacrylate copolymer, an epoxy resin, and a rosin-modified phenol resin, are exemplified), and subdivided to the desired particle size, e.g. 13 to 15 microns.
