Abstract

143,340. Trevail, E. F. March 10, 1919. Changing apparatus; reel and endless-web apparatus.-Relates to display apparatus of the type in which the picture, letterpress, &c. is periodically and automatically changed and is brought up to, and retracted from, a translucent screen so as to become clear and then to fade. A series of advertisements &c. are connected together to form an endless band, each section 9 having hemmed and indented ends 12 through which passes a slat 11, Fig. VI. The band passes over rolls 46, and the sections 9 hang in folds at the bottom of their travel, as shown in Fig. 1, the slats 11 moving along a groove 47 in which a break is made at 48 to allow a displaced slat to return automatically to the groove. The band and rolls are contained in a carriage 14 which is operated by a motor &c. to bring the advertisement towards and from a window 8, the band being backed by a glass sheet 16. The mechanism for reciprocating the carriage 14 consists of a slowly-rotating crank-disk 18 carrying a pin 20 which, during a part of its revolution, operates a cam-surface 21 - - 25. The shape of the cam-surface is such that the carriage 14 is at first withdrawn slowly from the window, and during the later part of its motion more rapidly, the first part of its return movement being rapid and the final part slow. For changing the picture, a traveller 27 slides vertically in guides 28 and engages a slat 11 on its downward motion to pull a fresh picture &c. up in front. The traveller 27 is actuated by a cord 30 wound round a drum 32 rotated alternately in opposite directions by gearing from the disk 18, a clutch 35 moved by a cam 33 on the disk 18 determining the direction of rotation. The advertisements &c. are lit up by lamps 10 in the carriage 14, additional lamps being arranged immediately behind the window 8 so as to cast light thereon only when the carriage 14 is retracted.
