Type-wheel machines.-A machine for simultaneously printing the amount in words and numerals on cheques, dividend warrants, &c. comprises groups A, B of type-wheels for printing the amounts in words and numerals respectively, or vice versa, a keyboard c for setting simultaneously both groups, and an impression-platen s<1>. The keys are arranged in columns, one for each denomination, and each column is associated with a series of sliding stop-bars w, arranged at different levels, and a sliding gate r which is geared to two type-wheels of the same denomination in the groups A, B respectively. The gates are urged upwards by weighted levers t, but are normally locked by pivoted catches v which engage stops u on the gates. The key-stems are each formed with an incline y<3> engaging one of the stop-bars w, and on depression of any key, the stop-bar releases the catch of the associated gate, which thereupon rises until the stop u thereon engages the stop-bar. The gates are formed with racks r' gearing with individual sectors l<1>, the set of sectors being mounted on nested sleeves l provided at the ends with pinions e<111>, which gear with pinions e<11>. The type-wheels are on nested sleeves provided at the ends with pinions e', c' engaging the pinions e<11>, two type-wheels of the same denomination in the groups A, B being geared through one of the pinions e<11> with the same gate r. The type-wheels for " pence " and " shillings " are provided with types for printing items consisting of ten or eleven pence or from ten to nineteen shillings, these types being set by reversing the normal direction of movement of the type-wheels. Reversal is effected by reversing-keys which move forwards the " pence " and " shilling gates and cause racks r<2 >thereon to gear with the sectors. The " tens of pounds " and " units of pounds " type-wheels are provided with types for printing jointly amounts consisting of from ten to nineteen pounds. These types are set by first operating a reversing-key which moves forward and couples together the " tens of pounds " and " units of pounds " gates, and then by depressing the " units of pounds " key corresponding to the units in the item. To prevent the gates from being reversed when they are in the raised position, each gate is provided with a pin v<1> which permits a catch u<1> to engage a toothed member t<1> when the gate is raised. Key interlocks.-Each column of keys is associated with a locking-bar x which co-operates with inclines y<1> and lugs y<2> on the key-stems. On depressing any key, the incline moves the bar to the right, and a spring then causes the bar to catch the top of the incline and lock the depressed key, the lugs y<2> preventing the other keys from being depressed. The locking-bar is released by a lever l<2> which is connected by a link m<11> to the impression platen s<1> described below, and is adapted to engage a lug x<1 >on the locking-bar when the platen is operated. Alining for impression.-Pivoted alining-members o', n' are moved into engagement with the type-wheels by means of slides p<11>, q<11> which are moved forwards by the platen s<1>. Platen-impression arrangements.-The cheque &c. is placed on a pivoted platen s<1> which is rooked forwards for impression by depressing a bell-crank which is pivoted at the side of the framework a and engages the platen at the rear.
