Abstract

1432947 Photochromism EMI Ltd 1 June 1973 [15 June 1972] 27919/72 Heading C4S [Also in Division G2] A light diverting or switching device comprises a slab 1 of material exhibiting changes in refractive index when irradiated with two beams 11, 13 of coherent light, a source 5 of said beams, means 10, 14 for directing the beams so that they irradiate the whole of the slab and produce changes in the form of a pattern of parallel bars which effect the diverting or switching of light falling on a minor surface 3 of the slab and means 19 sensing light emerging from another minor surface of the slab. The bars comprise interference fringes and divert light from laser 15 through 90 degrees (out of the plane of the paper) to detector 19. Another detector may sense undiffracted light so that the apparatus acts as a light switch. The fringes are erased by light from laser 20. The body may be tilted or the direction of the incident radiation varied for scanning. The material of slab 1 is rhodamine in ethanol or plastics material or anthracene derivatives.
