Abstract

1432936 Core sampling NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 April 1973 [26 Jan 1972 10 May 1972] 3705/72 and 21894/72 Heading E1F A core sampler comprises a hollow tubular body 20, (1), (9), Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown), a hollow cutting tip 28 vibratable relative thereto, and means 42 within the tubular body to locate a liner 41 so that the liner may receive and contain a sample, the liner and contained sample, in use, being removed through the rear end of the tubular body. The tip is vibrated axially by means of compressed air supplied via ducts (18), (19), 26 and 36 in the tubular body wall. Communication between the duct 36 and ports 29 in the tip causes the tip to be urged downwardly, until ports 30 in the tip are vented to atmosphere and ports 29 closed by a sealing ring 33, whereupon compressed air acting on shoulder 39 returns the tip upwardly. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the tip comprises upper and lower portions (51, 54), the upper portion 51 being reciprocated by the compressed air and striking the lower portion (54) into the ground. In a further alternative embodiment, Figure 24 (not shown), the lower end of the tube (105) and the upper end of the tip (113) are castellated, and vibration of the tip is in a rotational sense about the axis of the tube, this being achieved by introducing compressed air into the spaces between adjacent radial faces of the castellations. The liner 41 is nylon and is compressed on to a thin shim metal cylinder 42, this cylinder collapses to prevent the sample from falling out when the cover is withdrawn.
