Abstract

143,257. Berkel, C. F. M. van. May 15, 1919, [Convention date]. Screw-and-nut mechanism.-Relates to feed slides of the screw-operated nut-segment type, in which an automatic stop motion is arranged to throw the feed out of operation if the spindle is still rotated beyond a certain point, and automatically to re-engage the feed mechanism if the spindle is rotated in the reverse direction. One form of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 2, the feed slide 1 carrying a spring-pressed nut segment 5 in guides, and a bevelled portion 12 at the end of the feed screw 7 co-operating with a bevelled portion of the nut segment as soon as a stop 9 engages the feed slide. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the screw 7 has bevelled threads and co-acts with two segmental nuts 13, 14, one of which 14 is spring-pressed and capable of being forced into a recess in the slide by the bevelled threads. In a modification, the segmental nuts are both spring-pressed and inclined in opposite directions. In another construction the screw 7 is made with the last convolution of decreasing depth of thread to raise a spring-pressed nutsegment out of operation. In other constructions, the nut segment may be moved axially against'spring action, or it may he pivoted or may carry a spring-pressed plunger engaging a stop. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes also a construction shown in Fig. 10 (Cancelled), in which a nut segment 5 slides on a rod 23 and engages a stop 31, thereby pulling the rod against a disk 25 to raise a pawl 27 out of engagement with a ratchetwheel 28. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
