Abstract

1432561 Hydroformylation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 June 1973 [27 March 1972] 14252/72 Heading C2C A process for the hydroformylation of olifines comprises reacting an olefine at elevated temperature and pressure with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a compound of a Group VIII metal and a biphyllic ligand of trivalent phosphorus arsenic or antimony to give a crude liquid hydroformylation product containing an aldehyde and/or an alcohol, separating aldehyde and/or alcohol from the crude product and leaving a liquid, bringing the liquid optionally after separation of the Group VIII substantially free from aldehyde and alcohol under reverse osmosis conditions into contact with one side of a silicone rubber semipermeable membrane in which the polymer chains have been at least partly cross linked by γ-radiation whereby the liquid retained by the membrane contains a higher concentration of Group VIII metal compound and/or biphyllic ligand than the original liquid. A plurality of cells, e.g. in the form of hollow fibres may be used. The liquid retained by the membrane may be recycled, at least in part, to the hydroformylation. In a modification of the process, part of the liquid remaining after distillation of the aldehydes is recycled to the hydroformylation step and part is firstly treated to separate cobalt and then treated by reverse osmosis to recover ligand and then purged from the system.
