Abstract

1432316 Plethysmograph for measuring cardiac output M ASRICAN 10 April 1974 [19 April 1973] 15879/74 Heading G1N(E) In a plethysmograph for measuring cardiac (blood volume) output, the voltage (due to a source 10 of alternating constant current connected to electrodes 11 and 12) picked up by a pair of electrodes 14 and 15 is fed via an amplifier 5 to a detector 16 whose output is connected to a digital indicator 17 to provide a read-out corresponding to the base impedance Zo of the thorax. The detectors output is also applied to an amplifier 20 and to a differentiator and filter circuit 22 by way of a gate circuit 23. The gate circuit interrupts the signal to the differentiator circuit when the output of amplifier 20 exceeds a predetermined value (to mitigate the effects of breathing in the measurement outputs). The output of the amplifier 20 is proportional to the rate of change of impedance #Z of the thorax from base level, and the output of the differentiator 22 provides a signal proportional to <SP>d2</SP>/dt which is directly proportional to the pulmonary flow-rate. The amplifier 20 may be in the form of a differential amplifier whose other input is derived from the oscillator 10 via a detector 32. The outputs of the amplifier 20 and the differentiator 22 may be calibrated with the aid of a calibration generator 40. The description also discloses examples of typical waveforms, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
