Abstract

1431500 Cigarette filters PHILIP MORRIS INC 15 June 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 28658/73 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] A cigarette filter rod comprises a filament tow around which has been extruded and drawn down onto (see Divisions B4-5), a tubular sheath of expanded plastics. The examples relate to a crimped cellulose acetate tow of 3.3 denier/35000 total denier which, upstream of the extrusion die is spread, bloomed and plasticised with a solution of 10% triacetin, and, in Example 1, is sheathed by the extruder with 0.924 density polyethylene tumble blended with 0.3 parts by weight of paraffin oil and 0.5 parts 1, 1'-azobisformamide, the sheath tow being cooled in passage through two circular sizing plate openings in a cooling trough maintained under vacuum. In further Examples, (2), the sheath comprises polypropylene of 0.90 density, blended as in example (1), but with the addition of 0.52 parts of zinc oxide powder; (3), the polyethylene of example (1) was additionally blended with 1 part titanium dioxide; (4), the polyethylene of example (1) was additionally blended with 114 parts talcum powder, and 0.35 parts zinc oxide. Dimensions of the sheathed tow are specified. Upstream of the extrusion die, the tow is formed from cellulose acetate filaments 18 which, in being drawn by rolls 22 through a blooming and ooating chamber, are coated with a plasticiser e.g. a solution of 9 weight per cent triacetin, to promote inter-fibre bonding. The tow 24 is permitted to relax intermediate rolls 22 upstream of the extrusion die.
