Abstract

1431328 Fire retardant treatment for textile fabrics UNITED MERCHANTS & MFRS INC 27 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 54997/73 Heading D1P A process for rendering a cellulose containing fabric fire-retardant comprises impregnating the fibres thereof with an aminoplast precondensate, polymerising the precondensate while the fibres are in a wet and swollen state, thereafter adjusting the pH of the fabric to a value greater than 6.0, drying the fabric, impregnating the fabric with a solution of a dialkyl phosphonomethylol alkylamide having the formula I wherein R is alkyl (1-6C) and x is an integer from 1 to 3, and curing, washing and drying the impregnated fabric. The aminoplast precondensate may be in aqueous solution or emulsion in a concentration of 2 to 25% by weight together with an acid or oxidising catalyst, and is preferably a methylated trimethylol melamine. Curing may be carried out under steam and/or under pressure. The pH may be adjusted using bicarbonate. The compound I may be in aqueous or alcoholic solution at a concentration of 10 to 35%, by weight to provide 1 to 5% by weight of phosphorus in the final fabric, and is preferably dimethyl phosphonomethylol propionamide. The solution may further contain from 1 to 20% by weight of urea, ethylene urea, propylene urea, guanidine, dicyandiamide, thiourea or polyethylene imine. The cured fabric may be subjected to peroxidation, e.g. with perborate, followed by washing or rinsing. The fabric is preferably cotton or a cotton/high modulus rayon blend, but may be of jute, manilla, hemp, sisal, and ramie or blends thereof with or synthetic fibres.
