Abstract

1431294 Copying by scanning XEROX CORP 22 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54230/73 Heading H4F In a facsimile system which may operate with at least two different resolutions (to provide different document transmission times) the resolution is changed by changing both the resolvable element density along a line scan and the distance between successive line scans. Thus the high resolution scan may be at 96 elements/inch and 96 line scans/inch and the low resolution scan may be at 80 elements/inch and 76À9 scan lines/inch to provide a transmission time two-thirds that when using the high resolution scan. The document to be copied may be scanned by a light spot having a height at least as great as the scan pitch of the lower resolution scan, the printer using an effective aperture of substantially the same dimensions. The scanned light spot may be elliptical of size 0À0130 Î 0À0080 inch. The printer may be xerographic, electro-resistive or an impact printer.
