Abstract

1430349 Twisting NHK SPRING CO Ltd 27 Feb 1974 8898/74 Heading B3E Apparatus for twisting sinuous wire springs comprises a twisting unit including a base 29 adjustable along a guide rail 27, a spindle 31 slidable on the base by a first pneumatic actuator 35, a wire engaging jaw 33 on the spindle, and a pinion 31a on the spindle engaged by a rack 43 reciprocable by a second pneumatic actuator 45. In the embodiment shown, two similar units are disposed on opposite sides of a working station A. The actuators 35, 36 are operated to cause jaws 33, 34 to engage adjacent loops of the spring, and one actuator 45 or 46 is operated to twist the spring. The stroke of the racks and hence the degree of twist is determined by the position of lock nuts 53, 54, 55, 56 on rods 51, 52 secured to the racks. Springs are fed to the working station from a storage shoot 8 formed by two pairs (one pair shown) of plates 11, 12, by a pneumatic actuator 23 which on the outward stroke releases a lever 16 to drop a rod 15 so that a spring from the shoot 8 moves to lie over the rod, and picks up a spring 1 on a magnet 19, and delivers the spring to the working station. On the return stroke, levers 16 and rod 15 are raised to deliver a spring to a gravity shoot 9 whence the spring falls to lip 11a where it is lightly held by catch 24 ready for delivery.
