Abstract

1430258 Crash restraint bags NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 31 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972 (2) 10 Jan 1973] 36468/73 Heading B7B An actuation system for an inflatable crash bag 40 includes first and second gas generators 41, 42 which can communicate with the bag, a first switch 45 responsive to a vehicle collision impact above a first magnitude, a second switch 46 responsive to a collision impact above a second higher magnitude, and means to retard the operation of the second generator. In operation, when a collision impact is of or above the first but below the second magnitude the first switch 45 actuates the first gas generator to partially expand the bag, and when the collision is above the second magnitude the first switch 45 actuates the first generator as before and the second switch the second generator to expand the bag to its full capacity after a delay caused by the retarding means. The switches may be inertia responsive switches, e.g., as shown in Fig. 1 in which a mass 20 is suspended adjacent a permanent magnet 26 which attracts the mass to space it from a fixed contact 23. Upon a sufficient impact, the mass separates from the magnet 26. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mass is spring-biased from a fixed contact. The gas generating means have terminals connected through lines 43, 44 to switches 45 and 46 to a power source 47. In a modification a third switch (50) Fig. 6 (not shown) is responsive to an impact of a third level and actuates the gas generator before the second switch which is subjected to a delay. A failure proof switch (51) Fig. 6 (not shown) is interposed between power source (47) and gas generator terminals. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown) separate bags (52, 53) of different capacities are provided. The delay in operation of the second and third gas generators 55, 56, Fig. 9, may be provided by a delay circuit. Alternatively, explosive charges disposed in the gas generators may be fired by delayed action electric blasting caps (77, 79) Fig. 10 (not shown). A bag 86, Fig. 15, is inflated by three separate gas generators 86a, 86b, and 86c within the bag, a valve 99 being provided for discharging pressurized gas from the bag when fully expanded.
