Abstract
1430085 Photodegradable polymer compositions J E GUILLET and H G TROTH 6 July 1973 [7 April 1972 12 Sept 1972] 16076/72 and 42328/72 Headings C3C C3B C3P and C3R Photodegradable compositions comprise (1) a major proportion by weight of a synthetic polymer which is (a) an addition polymer or copolymer of CH 2 = CXY where X is H or alkyl and Y is H, alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid alkyl ester, hydroxyl, acyloxy, cyano, alicyclic of not more than 8 carbon atoms, alkoxy, amido or alkenyl; or (b) a polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, polyether, polyepoxide, polyamide ester, polyimide, poly(amideimide), polyurea or polyamino acid condensation polymer; and (2) a minor proportion by weight of a ketone copolymer having ketone carbonyls in side chains immediately adjacent to the backbone polymeric chain in amount of 0À01 to 5 weight per cent by weight of synthetic polymer and ketone copolymer. The compositions may be prepared by dry, solution or melt blending or by two-stage polymerization; and may be made into films, bottles, cups, trays, containers, cigar holders, fibres, sheets, twines, disposable cutlery, plates and dishes. Foamed products may be obtained by incorporating blowing agents, e.g. pentane; or by whipping gas, e.g. air, into the melt. Many suitable polymers are specified and examples describe compositions comprising polystyrene and (1) styrene/phenyl vinyl ketone copolymer and (2, 3 and 5) styrene/methyl isopropenyl ketone copolymer; and polyethylene and (4 and 5) ethylene/methyl isopropenyl ketone copolymer and (4) ethylene/methyl vinyl ketone copolymer. In Example 3 the composition is blended with a foaming agent and made into foamed sheets.
