Abstract
1430077 Reinforced silicone elastomers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 35637/72 Headings C3G and C3T A reinforced silicone elastomer comprises a blend of from 95% to 20% by weight of crosslinked silicone elastomer and from 5% to 80% of a polymeric material, the reinforced silicone elastomer being formed from a composition comprising at least one cross-linkable poly- (organosiloxane) comprising repeating units having the structure -[-Si(R)(R 1 )-O-] x -, where x is an integer and the groups R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are hydrocarbyl radicals or substituted hydrocarbyl radicals, and at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated material, and in which a substantial proportion of the cross-linking of the polyorganosiloxane is effected before a substantial proportion of the ethylenically unsaturated material is polymerized. The ethylenically unsaturated material subsequently being polymerized. When the poly(organosiloxane) comprises a plurality of hydroxyl groups, an alkyl silicate or alkyl polysilicate may be used as cross-linking agent and when the poly- (organosiloxane) comprises a plurality of ethylenically unsaturated groups, an alkyl hydrogeno polysiloxane may be used as crosslinking agent. Examples are given in which (a) a hydroxy-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane), ethyl polysilicate, methyl methacrylate, dibutyl tin dilaurate, t-butyl peroctoate and nbutylamine mixture is heated in a mould until gelation occurs and then heated further; (b) a vinyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) containing vinyl groups along the polymer chain, methyl methacrylate, methylhydrogeno-polysiloxane, chloroplatinic acid and t-butyl peroctoate mixture is heated as in (a); (c) a mixture as in (a), except that methyl methacrylate is replaced by n-butyl methacrylate, styrene, a divinyl benzene/ethyl vinyl benzene mixture or a styrene/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate mixture and t-butyl perbenzoate is used as polymerization catalyst is treated as in (a); (d) as in (a), except that ethyl orthosilicate replaces ethyl polysilicate, or azobisisobutyronitrile is used as polymerization catalyst.
