1429860 Making interconnected bags WAVIN BV 23 March 1973 14273/73 Heading B5D An apparatus for making a band of bags interconnected by lines of perforations comprises feed rollers 6 for a tubular plastics foil, perforating rollers 13, 14 for transversely perforating the foil, co-operating sealing drums 7 and 9 for transversely welding the foil, a drum 19 which has at least one circumferential ridge (20), Fig. 2 (not shown), for opening successive perforations and for reflecting or radiating light through the perforation towards at least one photo-electric cell 17, and a cutting knife 16 or a tearing mechanism for separating a band of bags from the continuous foil. One or more first counters 23, each associated with a respective photo-electric cell 17, can activate a printing unit 15 and the cutting knife 16. The apparatus includes a second counting arrangement 24 for counting predetermined lengths of foil which is also coupled to the cutting knife 16. By comparison of the numbers of the counts made by the first and second counters, the apparatus can determine automatically and reject a band of bags which includes malformed or absent perforations. In another embodiment counts corresponding to each bag registered by the counter 24 may be fed to the counter 23, if the counter 23 has not also counted the bag and previously reset the counter 24. Counts which are transmitted by the counter 24 to the counter 23 before counter 24 is reset, indicate that a perforation is absent or unsatisfactory and permit automatic rejection of the band. As alternatives to the arrangement shown the perforating rollers 13, 14 may be located downstream of a drum 10 and co-operating roller 11, and the printing unit 15 may be arranged upstream of the sealing drums. The bands may be folded or wound.
