Abstract
1429790 Moulding hubs and pulleys QUINTON HAZELL (HOLDINGS) Ltd 2 Oct 1973 [12 July 1972] 32502/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A torque transmitting article having a bore 24 therethrough, e.g. a pulley or a hub, comprises a pressed sheet metal part 20 in the form of a radially extending body 32 from the centre of which a tubular boss 34 extends axially, and on to at least the inner portion of which a plastics casing 22 is moulded to encase the boss but to leave the bore clear. A fan belt pulley 50 (Fig. 7, not shown) or a combined fan 22 and pulley 50, Fig. 16, may be moulded integrally with the plastics casing 22. Alternatively, Fig. 15, the pulley 50 may be part of the pressed metal sheet 20 which may have keying tabs 38 and keying holes 40, 52 for the plastics material. In Figs. 1 and 2 a hub 19 comprises a metal part 20 having screw threaded holes 30 for attachment of a pulley (not shown) fitted on to a plastics boss 26 formed with the casing 22. When the plastics material is moulded the metal part 20 is placed in a mould on a core pin and the plastics bosses 26, 44 are formed with bores coaxial with that of the metal part. The plastics material shrinks after forming and provides a good frictional fit on the pulley spindle. Alternatively the bores can be preformed with splines or keyways matching those of the spindle, or a splined spindle can be forced into a plain bore to create longitudinal serrations. In Fig. 14 a fan belt pulley comprises a metal part including two pieces 20a, 20b which are either welded together or united solely by being encased in the plastics. The plastics material may be polypropylene or glass fibre reinforced nylon and the metal body may be square or round.
