Abstract
1429318 Water purification; silver chloride MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 8 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972 30 March 1972 16 June 1972 12 Sept 1972] 6325/73 Headings C1A and C1C Water is bacteriocidally purified by treatment with silver chloride which has contained chlorine in excess of the stoichiometric amount and has been heated to remove the excess chlorine, the silver chloride being used in the form of a solid plate, suitably of a size 5Î5 cm. and of a thickness 0À5 mm. Sufficient of the silver chloride plates may be used to provide a surface area of 20-2000 cm.<SP>2</SP> per litre of water treated. Weighting substances may be incorporated. The silver chloride plates may be prepared from commercial AgCl powder by shaping it into plate form and then heating to remove the excess chlorine, e.g. by hot rolling at 400‹ C. Alternatively, the crude AgCl may be heated to above its M.P. to remove the excess chlorine and then either moulded to plate form and hot rolled at 150-300‹ C., or the molten AgCl may be picked up on a cooled cylinder rotating in the molten surface, the resulting film of purified AgCl being peeled off and cut into plates.
