Abstract

1428920 Sterilisation MORTON-NORWICH PRODUCTS INC 15 May 1974 21637/74 Heading A2D [Also in Divisions A5 and C7] A bactericidal solution is made by electrolysis of aq. NaCl at pH 6-7, whereby nascent Cl 2 is generated, at least 80% of which is in the form of HOCl, and the solution is immediately applied to a bacterialaden surface e.g. a meat carcass. The NaCl solution may be acidified with 85% HAc to give a Cl content in the product of 25-2000 ppm. Apparatus for preparing and distributing the solution includes a tank containing solid NaCl and in which a saturated solution is maintained, acid and water being automatically added in manually-adjustable amounts to give the pH required. The acidified solution, with up to 100 parts of additional water, is pumped to an electrolysis cell having an anode of Pt, an alloy thereof, C or Pbo 2 and a cathode of Ni or Ti, the electrodes being supported between PVC spacers. A baffle in the cell prevents pulsating fluid from the pump passing directly between the electrodes. A portable spray wand is connected to the cell output and has electric switches for operating the electrolysis process or providing a flush of pure water, suitable circuitry being described.
