Abstract

1428826 Vehicle suspensions C E B NORDBERG 10 May 1973 [10 May 1972] 22334/73 Heading B7D In a sensing apparatus for controlling the operation of a bogie lift which positions auxiliary wheels located adjacent the driving wheels of a vehicle either in a raised inoperative position or a lowered operative position, a lever 11 connected at one end to a spring assembly 13 on the driving axle is rotatably mounted at the other end 11b in a housing 14 fixed by an attachment member to a propellor shaft housing, and a rod 16 coupled to the lever 11 is arranged to actuate a limit switch 12 when the spring assembly is deflected by more than a predetermined amount. The bogie lift comprises a pump assembly 34 controlled from a panel 35 located in the driving cab and including a two position switch 36 for selectively energizing a pump direction valve 33 to move the auxiliary wheels up or down. When the switch 36 is actuated to raise the auxiliary wheels and the spring deflection is such as to indicate that the load transfer to the driving axle is excessive, the limit switch 12 is actuated to energize a switchon delay relay 31 and a switch-off delay relay 32 through which the direction valve 33 is energized to lower the auxiliary wheels and reduce the driving axle load. The switch-on delay relay 31 prevents operation of the bogie lift due to transient load changes, the switch-off delay relay 32 enables the auxiliary wheels to be moved to the fully lowered position, and a switch 28 is actuated by hydraulic pressure when either end position is reached. The control panel 35 provides for lifting of the auxiliary wheels to increase the driving axle load on slippery surfaces or to reduce tyre wear.
