1428152 Substituted formamidines CIBAGEIGY AG 16 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 27240/74 Divided out of 1428151 Heading C2C The invention comprises a compound of Formula I, a salt thereof with an inorganic or organic acid, or a quaternary compound of Formula Ia where R 1 is C 2 -C 6 alkyl or C 3 -C 5 alkenyl and R 2 is C 1 -C 12 alkyl or C 3 -C 5 alkenyl, or R 1 is methyl and R 2 is straight chain or branched C 2 -C 7 , C 10 , C 13 or C 14 alkyl, C 8 or C 9 straight chain alkyl or C 11 or C 12 branched alkyl, or R 1 and R 2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring which may contain further heteroatoms as ring members; R 3 is C 8 -C 14 alkyl and R 4 is C 1 -C 12 alkyl; X- is the anion of a strong acid. Compounds of Formula I may be prepared by reacting a formamide R 1 R 2 NCHO with dialkyl sulphates, and reacting the addition compound so formed in situ with amine R 3 NH 2 , or reacting the formamide with PCl 3 , PCl 5 , POCl, COCl 2 or SOCl 2 to form a chloroformamidinium chloride, and reacting the latter with the amine. The quaternary compound Ia may be formed from I by reaction with for example alkyl halide, alkyl sulphonate or dialkyl sulphates. Examples of I include compounds in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are various alkyl groups, in which R 1 = R 2 = allyl, and in which R 1 and R 2 with the nitrogen form a piperidine or morpholine ring. In examples of Ia, R 1 = R 2 = isopropyl, R 3 = dodecyl and R 4 and X- are methyl and CH 3 SO 4 <SP>-</SP>, or dodecyl and I-. The compounds may be used in compositions for the abscission, desiccation or defoliation of unliquefied parts of plants.
