Abstract

1428111 Safety belt retractor IRVIN GREAT BRITAIN LTD 21 March 1973 [23 March 1972] 13677/72 Heading A3V [Also in Division B8] A retractor, e.g. for a vehicle safety strap 7, comprises a reel 1 biassed by a spring 6 in the winding direction, ratchet wheels 4 on the reel, pawls 5 for looking engagement with the ratchet wheels and means 8 for displacing the reel relative to the pawls into a position in which the pawls and ratchets are disengaged; the displacing means may become or be made inoperative in use Whereupon tension in the strap serves to produce locking engagement of the pawls and ratchets. In the embodiment shown the ends of the reel axle are displaceable in slots 2 in a bracket 3 and guides 8 on a bar 9 engage the periphery of the wound strap 7 to displace the reel. After the strap has been unwound to some extent the guides 8 become inoperative but stops 10 frictionally coupled to the reel hold the latter in disengaged position. Slight belt retraction disengages the stops and normal strap tension, substantially equal to the force of spring 6, suffices to displace the reel to locking position. In an alternative embodiment the reel locks under predetermined strap tension or vehicle acceleration. The reel is displaced to the disengaged position by a spring which is overcome by the predetermined strap tension. Means may also be provided for overcoming the spring bias in the event of the predetermined acceleration or vehicle-sensitive further pawl means may lock the ratchet wheels 4 or further ratchets on the reel. The reel may be displaceable with a component of motion parallel to its axis.
