Abstract

1428108 Oxygen-bridged organometallic compounds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 April 1973 [15 May 1972] 22713/72 Heading C2J [Also in Division C3] Novel organometallic compounds suitable as catalysts for the polymerization or copolymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers contain in their molecule two or more metal atoms, linked together by one or more oxygen bridges, at least one of the metals being a transition metal of Group IVa of the Periodic Table having bonded thereto at least one hydrocarbyl or -CR 2 Z(R) 3 group (wherein Z denotes Si, Ge, Sn or Pb and R denotes H or a hydrocarbon radical) and at least one of the metals being a metal of Group IIIb or IVb of the Periodic Table having bonded thereto at least one hydrocarbyl oxide group or dihydrocarbyl amino group. For the purposes of defining such compounds Si is regarded as a metal. The compounds may be prepared by reacting together an appropriate transition metal compound and an appropriate metal hydrocarbyl oxide or a partially hydrolysed hydrocarbyloxy or hydrocarbylamino compound containing the appropriate metals in a liquid organic medium. Examples describe the preparation of (1) (2) mixtures of and (t.BuO) 2 Si[-OZr(CH 2 SiMe 3 ) 3 ] 2 , (3) (Eto) 3 SiOZr)#-allyl) 3 , (4) (PhCH 2 ) 2 Hf[O-Si(Ot.Bu) 3 ] 2 , (5) (Me 3 SiCH 2 ) 2 Hf[O-Si(Ot.Bu) 3 ] 2 and (6) PhCH 2 Hf[O-Si(Ot.Bu) 3 ] 3 . In further examples (7) ethylene is polymerized to polyethylene in presence of a catalyst formed from tetrakis (tert.-butoxy) siloxanediol and tetrakisbenzylzirconium IV, (8) as in (7) using as a catalyst a reaction product of and tetrakis (trimethylsilylmethyl) zirconium IV, (9) as in (7) using as a catalyst a reaction product of bromotris (#-allyl) zirconium IV and [(t.BuO) 2 SiOH] 2 O, (10) as in (7) using as a catalyst a reaction product of [(t.BuO) 2 SiOH] 2 O and tetrakisbenzyl hafnium IV, (11) as in (7) using as a catalyst a reaction product of tris- (tert. -butoxy)siloxysilanediol and tetrakisbenzylzirconium IV, (12) as in (7) using as a catalyst a reaction product of aluminium meso-tetraphenylporphyrin hydroxide (formed by reacting aluminiumtriethyl with meso-tetraphenylporphin followed by hydrolysis) and tetrakisbenylzirconium IV, (13) an ethylene/propylene mixture is polymerized using as a catalyst a reaction product of tetrakisbenzylizirconium IV and tetrakis(tert.-butoxy) siloxanediol, (14) as in (13) using a catalyst or reaction product of tetrakisbenzyl titanium IV and tetrakis(tert.- butoxy)siloxanediol, and (15) as in (13) using as catalyst a reaction product of tetrakisbenzylhafnium and silicon meso-tetraphenylporphyrin dihydroxide (formed by hydrolysing the reaction product of silicon tetrachloride and meso-tetraphenylporphin).
