Abstract

1427885 Moulded article MAGYAR KABEL MUVEK 14 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 1627/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Conductive heat-shrinkable shaped articles composed of an ethylene polymer and 15 to 20 weight per cent of conductive carbon black and having an A.C. resistance remaining unchanged and a D.C. resistance increasing by at least one order of magnitude upon mechanical deformation or heat-shrinking, are prepared by mixing the polymer with the conductive carbon black for 30 to 120 minutes at a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the polymer, converting the resulting composition into an article, e.g. by extrusion or calendering, crosslinking the article by irradiation or with a chemical cross-linking agent and subjecting the cross-linked article to physical deformation associated with stretching. The carbon black may be acetylene black of particle size 1-300 nm. The compositions may be used to make sheets and tubes for cable terminations. In examples tubes are extruded from compositions comprising acetylene black and (1) polyethylene and polyisobutylene, cross-linked by irradiation or (3) ethylene/butene copolymer, cross-linked with p-methoxybenzoyl peroxide, and the tubes expanded; and sheets are calendered from compositions of acetylene black, polyethylene and polyisobutylene, cross-linked by irradiation, biaxially stretched and slit to form heat-shrinkable tapes.
