Abstract
1427855 Novel resins ARAKAWA RINSAN KAGAKU KOGYO KK 26 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973 1 March 1973 12 Nov 1973] 8718/74 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Resins are made by reacting, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, a benzene derivative I with a Diels-Alder addition compound II or III wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 -C 18 alkyl group, n is 0 or an integer 1-5, R<SP>2</SP>-R<SP>5</SP> are H or methyl, R<SP>6</SP>-R<SP>9</SP> are H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, A is -CH 2 - or -CH 2 CH 2 -, m is 0, 1 or 2 and each of X and Y are -COOH, -COOR<SP>a</SP> (R<SP>a</SP>=C 1 -C 4 alkyl) or CN, or X and Y together form an anhydride ring. Products are not characterized but it appears that in general II or III are added by Friedel-Crafts type reaction, with loss of their unsaturation, to the aromatic ring, the identity of X and Y being retained; where X+Y is anhydride, acylation of the benzene ring may occur. The product resins may be reacted further; e.g. COOR<SP>a</SP>, CN or anhydrate groups may be hydrolysed to the acid or its salt; COOH may be neutralized to form its salt; where COOR<SP>a</SP> and COOH are present, or anhydride, neutralization with ammonia gives product containing -CONH 2 and -COONH 4 groups, and neutralization with primary or secondary amine, e.g. n-propylamine, dimethylamine or diethylamine similarly gives amide-containing salt. Duls-Alder compounds II and III may be made in conventional manner by reacting an α,#-unsaturated dibasic acid or its derivative (e.g. maleic anhydride) with an acylic or cyclic conjugated diene (e.g. isoprene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene). The products may be used as substitutes for rosin, for example for sizing paper, and as emulsifying agents.
