Abstract

1427728 Automatic exchange systems PLESSEY CO Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39668/72 Heading H4K An exchange system is arranged as a plurality of control areas each including a common control centre exercising control via data links upon a plurality of remote switching units and each control area is divided geographically into a plurality of sectors each including a plurality of remote switching units so that if the common control centre for the control area should fail, the control responsibility for each sector can be transferred to a geographically adjacent control centre. The Figure shows within a rectangle the control area for common control centre CCU1 which area is sub-divided into four sectors SUB-AREA 1 to 4. In addition to the data links, e.g. DLX, DLA, DLN connecting the remote switching units with their area control centre there are provided standby data links, e.g. SBDLA linking each sector with a respective geographically adjacent control area. The control centres CCU utilize stored programme control and have stored in a backing store the interconnection pattern and a recent directory to equipment number translation table for those sectors which they may have to take over. Failure of a control centre, e.g. CCU1 is detected by data path monitors associated with the remote switching units and the detection results in the enabling of the standby data path(s) for the sector(s) and the receipt of an alarm signal at the standby control contre(s). On receipt of this alarm a standby control centre signals a maintenance control centre MCC and the receipt of such signals from four standby control centres indicates total failure of control centre CCU1. Each standby control centre rearranges its operation to include the extra sector and the information in its backing store concerning the sector is updated by information supplied by the maintenance control centre. The changeover is capable of being achieved in about 20 secs. To overcome the problem that the standby control centre has no knowledge of the existing calls in the sector taken over all existing calls may be forced released after a period of time, e.g. 5 mins. A marker arrangement capable of performing this operation is disclosed in Specification 1,383,107.
