Abstract

1427488 Fabric coating composition E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 18649/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Fabrics, e.g. of cotton, polyester, polyamide and cotton/polyester blends, may be rendered water repellant by coating on one or both sides with aqueous dispersions comprising (1) a copolymer of at least 30 weight per cent of ethylene with up to 70 weight per cent of an α-, #- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (2) a wax and (3) a terpolymer of 64 to 77 weight per cent of vinyl acetate, 20 to 30 weight per cent of ethylene and 3 to 6 weight per cent of N-methylol acrylamide, the dry weight ratio of ethylene copolymer/wax to terpolymer being 70:30 to 20:80. The unsaturated acid may be acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic or fumaric, and the copolymer may be partially neutralised, e.g. with sodium ions. The wax may be paraffin or microcrystalline petroleum wax, or bees, wool, Japan, myrtle, mace, palm kernel, spermacetic, carnuba, candelilla, bayberry, montan, polyolefin, chlorinated paraffin or Fischer-Tropich wax. The compositions may also contain fillers, pigments, thickeners, defoamers, fungicides, mildewicides and fire retardants; and may be applied by padding or blade coating. In examples cotton, polyester and nylon fabrics are blade coated with aqueous dispersions comprising ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers 75% neutralised with sodium ions, paraffin wax, dimerised wood rosin, vinyl acetate/ethylene/N-methylol acrylamide terpolymers, clay, calcium carbonate, antimony oxide, titanium dioxide, chlorinated paraffins, defoamer, pigments, lauryl pentachlorophenate, salicyl anilide, copper 8-quinolate, zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate/zinc mercaptobenzothiazole and ammonium polyacrylate.
